The Historical Society of Woodstock

Overview

The Historical Society of Woodstock is a nonprofit organization founded in 1929 by a group of artists, writers, academics, and local citizens. Its mission is to preserve, interpret, and share the unique history of Woodstock through dynamic exhibitions and extensive archival collections.

History

Established by a diverse group of individuals passionate about preserving Woodstock's history, the Historical Society has grown to become a vital part of the community. Over the years, it has accumulated an impressive archival collection of over 10,000 items, including paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture, textiles, photographs, books, manuscripts, correspondence, documents, film/sound recordings, and antique tools. These resources span from the 1700s to the present, providing a comprehensive view of Woodstock's development.

Collection and Exhibitions

The Historical Society boasts a fine art collection of over 800 works, reflecting the artistic richness of the region. One of its notable exhibitions is the Tool Shed exhibit, which showcases tools used by farm families, tradespeople, and merchants from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. This exhibit highlights the community's historical occupations and daily life.

Grants and Conservation Efforts

The organization has received significant grants, including a 2024 NYSCA/Greater Hudson Heritage Foundation Conservation Treatment Grant for restoring paintings and a Wood Dock Foundation grant. These funds support the restoration of artworks and the development of a new building, ensuring a safe and environmentally sound storage facility for its collections.

Future Plans

The Historical Society is currently planning the installation of a modern archive and research center, aiming to provide a state-of-the-art facility for preserving its extensive historical collections. This project reflects the organization's ongoing commitment to maintaining and showcasing Woodstock's history for future generations.

Community Engagement

Throughout the summer, the Historical Society offers various exhibits and events, engaging both locals and tourists in the rich history and cultural heritage of Woodstock. By fostering a collective appreciation of the past, the organization plays a pivotal role in the community's identity and preservation efforts.
