Illowa Council, Inc. Boy Scouts of America

The Illowa Council, Inc. Boy Scouts of America, identified by the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 36-2616917, operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the Quad Cities area. This council serves a broad region encompassing 13 counties across Illinois and Iowa, specifically: Bureau, Henry, Knox, McDonough, Mercer, Rock Island, Stark, and Warren in Illinois, and Cedar, Clinton, Jackson, Muscatine, and Scott in Iowa.

Mission and Programs

The organization's mission aligns with the broader Boy Scouts of America (BSA) goal to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices throughout their lives. This is accomplished by instilling the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The Illowa Council offers a range of programs tailored for diverse age groups, including Cub Scouts for younger children and Scouts BSA for older youth. These programs focus on character development, citizenship education, and personal fitness.

Activities and Events

The council hosts various events and activities to support its mission, including shooting sports events, camping trips at Camp Loud Thunder, and specific themed day camps such as the INVENTION CONVENTION. Additionally, the Illowa Council organizes significant fundraising events like the Annual Scouting Clays Classic, which supports over 4,000 youth and leaders in Scouting.

Health and Safety

Safety is prioritized within the organization, with the BSA's "Scouts First" initiative ensuring the protection of youth. The council adheres to comprehensive health and safety guidelines, including mandatory youth protection training for leaders and the use of detailed medical forms for participants in Scouting activities.

Governance

The governance of the Illowa Council involves a board of directors responsible for overseeing its operations. Despite its service to thousands of youth, the board does not conduct regular formal assessments of leadership or ensure an inclusive recruitment process.

Impact

The Illowa Council has a profound impact on the community by developing leadership and instilling values in young people. Many community leaders in the Quad Cities area have been involved in Scouting through this council, reflecting its influence on local leadership development.
