📃 🖋️ Today is a great day for Colorado's wild horses! 🐴 🎉 Today, Governor Jared Polis signed into law House Bill 25-1283 — Wild Horse Project Management & Immunocontraception — cementing Colorado’s position as a national leader in humane, in-the-wild conservation. 👏 The law invests in funding and resources to support fertility control efforts and fund an 8-strong professional darting team. This investment in on-range management not only makes sound economic sense by reducing the need for costly helicopter removals, but it also prioritizes the well-being of these iconic animals. By focusing on fertility control, we can help keep more horses in their natural habitat and decrease reliance on unaffordable methods that can be harmful like helicopter roundups. Porter Springs, within Nevada's Blue Wing Complex, had always been a reliable place to find wild burros. But after the last roundup in July 2024, our team cannot find a single burro in the area. There does, however, appear to be no shortage of privately owned cattle. In 2023, an AWHC Freedom of Information Act request revealed that 31 of 45 burros who had been rounded up during that year's Blue Wing Complex roundup died in the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Axtell, Utah holding facility. They had succumbed to a stress-induced blood disease. Not only was this tragedy preventable, but a similar mass casualty occurred several years later when 25 burros from Utah died of a virus at the same facility. Burros are tough but sensitive animals, and are highly susceptible to disease and infection after the trauma of a helicopter roundup and removal from their home. Summer roundup season is almost one month away—and this cannot happen a third time.
