Sigma Theta Tau International Inc.
Sigma Theta Tau International Inc., commonly referred to as Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), is a prominent nonprofit organization in the nursing sector. It is the second-largest nursing organization globally, with a strong focus on advancing nursing scholarship, leadership, and service.
Founding and History
Sigma Theta Tau International was founded on October 4, 1922, by six nursing students at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now known as the Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis, Indiana. The organization was supported by the school's director, Ethel Palmer Clarke. The name "Sigma Theta Tau" is derived from the Greek words storgé, tharsos, and timé, meaning "love," "courage," and "honour," respectively. STTI was incorporated as a nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) tax status in 1985.
Mission and Vision
The mission of Sigma Theta Tau International is to advance world health and celebrate nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Its vision is to be the global organization of choice for nursing, fostering a community of nurse leaders who improve world health through knowledge and scholarship.
Membership and Chapters
Sigma Theta Tau International has over 135,000 active members and a total of more than 525,000 lifetime members worldwide. Members reside in more than 90 countries, with 39% holding master’s and/or doctoral degrees. The organization has about 540 chapters across over 700 institutions of higher education globally.
Initiatives and Contributions
STTI is renowned for its support of nursing research, having been the first U.S. organization to fund nursing research in 1936. It offers numerous grants and scholarships annually, contributing significantly to nursing scholarship and evidence-based practice. The society publishes several scholarly journals, including the Journal of Nursing Scholarship and Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing, providing critical resources for nursing professionals.
