MANAGEMENT CENTER
We help social justice leaders build and run more equitable, sustainable, and results-driven organizations. We want to see more social change in this country. We know that producing it is hard. Disparities in money and power mean that social justice advocates need to fight more effectively than their opponents, and in a way that’s aligned with their values and vision. For managers and leaders, that also means a different approach to management. That’s where The Management Center comes in: we help social justice leaders learn how to build and run more equitable, sustainable, and results-driven organizations.

The Management Center
The Management Center (TMC) is a US nonprofit organization dedicated to helping social justice leaders build and run more equitable, sustainable, and results-driven organizations. Founded in 2006 by Jerry House, Rebecca Epstein, and Peter Lewis, TMC offers intensive coaching services and management training courses, equipping leaders with the skills and tools necessary to effectively manage their organizations[1][2].
Mission
TMC's mission is to support social justice leaders in creating organizations that are equipped to tackle systemic issues effectively. They emphasize practices informed by critical race theory and focus on antiracist and equitable management, advocating for progressive social movements[2].
Activities and Programs
- Training Programs: TMC provides training to numerous nonprofit organizations, offering courses like "Management 101" and other resources designed to foster sustainable and equitable management practices[2].
- Coaching Services: Executive directors and their teams receive hands-on coaching to build organizational capacity and navigate leadership transitions or significant growth phases[1].
- Resources and Publications: TMC publishes materials on effective management, including books such as Managing to Change the World and Management in a Changing World, which emphasize equity, sustainability, and results-driven management[5].
Funding and Impact
TMC has received significant funding from major foundations, including a $250,000 grant from the Ford Foundation and a $5 million grant from the Chicago Community Trust in 2021[1][2]. It has trained over 79,000 managers and worked with more than 1,300 organizations since its inception[2].
Leadership
Jakada Imani serves as the CEO of TMC. He has a background in racial, social, and economic activism, previously working with organizations like the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights and the Center for Popular Democracy[2].
Political Orientation
TMC has been described as a left-of-center organization, actively supporting movements such as Black Lives Matter and advocating for critical race theory-influenced social justice practices[2].
