Turkish American Association of Central Ohio
The Turkish American Association of Central Ohio (TAACO) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded in January 1969. Its primary objective is to preserve and promote Turkish culture and heritage among Americans, particularly in the Central Ohio area. The association was established as many Turkish professionals began settling in the United States, starting from the mid-1950s.
History
The Turkish community in Columbus has a long history, dating back to the mid-20th century when Turkish professionals arrived for specialized training and later decided to stay in the U.S. By the late 1960s, it became clear that many had made Columbus their new home while still maintaining strong ties to their Turkish heritage. This led to the formation of TAACO to serve as a cultural bridge between Turkish Americans and the broader community.
Mission and Activities
TAACO aims to represent the best of Turkish culture and history to Americans. It organizes various events and activities to achieve this goal, including cultural festivals and charity events. Key events hosted by TAACO include the celebration of Turkish Republic Day and the annual Children's Day festivities.
Major Events
- Turkish Republic Day Celebrations: TAACO organizes annual galas to commemorate the founding of the Turkish Republic. These events often feature cultural performances and are designed to showcase Turkish heritage.
- Children's Day Celebrations: The association hosts festivities for National Sovereignty and Childrenβs Day on April 23rd, promoting cross-cultural understanding and community engagement.
- Charity Events: TAACO engages in charity work, including fundraising for international crises such as the recent earthquakes in Turkey.
Community Role
TAACO serves as a vital link between the Turkish-American community and the broader Central Ohio community. It plays a significant role in fostering cultural exchange, promoting education about Turkish history and culture, and supporting community members through various community services.
