Dayton Theatre Guild
The Dayton Theatre Guild is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the art of theatre in the community. Founded in the late years of World War II, it has been a cornerstone of cultural and artistic expression in the region for nearly eight decades.
Mission
The Guild's mission is to provide entertainment, encourage the advancement of theatre art, and offer opportunities for cultural and technical growth through live theatre experiences. It achieves this by staging a wide variety of productions, including seldom-seen plays, contemporary works, and area premieres, alongside classic pieces. The organization relies on an all-volunteer cast, crew, and administration, welcoming individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate, regardless of prior experience[1][4].
History
The Dayton Theatre Guild began its journey with a performance of Outward Bound at the Dayton Art Institute in 1945. Over the years, it has staged nearly 500 productions. Initially performing at the USO and Dayton Art Institute, the Guild later moved into a carriage house in Dayton View in 1950. In 1963, it relocated to a converted postal substation on Salem Avenue, where it remained for 46 years. The Guild's current home in the Oregon District was established in 2009 when it converted an old gym into a thrust theatre[1][2].
Community Role
The Guild serves as a gathering place for storytelling and community building, fostering ties across the Miami Valley. It offers a platform for people from various professions to engage in theatre, whether as actors, directors, designers, or technicians. Auditions are held throughout the year, providing opportunities for both stage and backstage participation[3].
Operations and Finances
As a non-profit, the Dayton Theatre Guild depends on volunteer efforts and financial support from patrons and local foundations. It recently undertook a solar panel project to reduce utility costs, aiming to redirect funds toward its core mission of producing innovative theatre[2]. Financially, the organization has reported revenues in excess of $200,000, with expenses around $100,000 to $116,000, maintaining total assets of approximately $500,000 to $802,000[5].
Projects and Initiatives
In addition to its theatrical productions, the Guild engages in initiatives such as the recent solar panel installation to optimize resource allocation. By reducing its reliance on external energy sources, the organization can focus more on producing diverse and engaging theatrical experiences for the community[2].
