Home 2022 - Youth Pride Rhode Island

Youth Pride, Inc. is the only nonprofit in RI specifically dedicated to meet the needs of LGBTQIA+ youth 24 and under. Our mission is to meet the unique, ongoing needs of these youth & young adults through direct service, support, advocacy, and education. Youth Pride, Inc. (YPI) is the only safe LGBTQ Youth Center in the State of Rhode Island dedicated exclusively to meeting the needs of youth and young adults impacted by their sexual orientation and/or gender identity/expression. YPI's mission is to provide the services and opportunities necessary for youth and young adults to live full, health lives. YPI also works to end homophobia and transphobia in environments where young people live work, study and play. We accomplish this through educational presentations and professional development trainings that help create systems of change and empower young people to advocate for themselves with a sense of self-efficacy.

Youth Pride, Inc.

Youth Pride, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Rhode Island, dedicated to meeting the unique needs of LGBTQIA2S+ youth and young adults under the age of 24. Established in 1992, it began as a support group for the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Greater Rhode Island, initially called "The Way Out."

History

Youth Pride, Inc. grew out of a small weekly group that quickly expanded, eventually becoming a standalone organization with its own tax-exempt status in 1994. The organization's initial support group, "The Way Out," is commemorated with a main discussion group of the same name.

Mission

The mission of Youth Pride, Inc. is to provide direct service, support, advocacy, and education to LGBTQ+ youth and young adults. The organization aims to eliminate prejudice against LGBTQ+ youth and provide them with the necessary social services to live healthy and fulfilling lives.

Programs and Services

Youth Pride, Inc. operates a drop-in center where youth can access various resources, including a Basic Needs Pantry, counseling services provided by licensed clinicians, and educational programs. The center hosts multiple groups catering to diverse interests, such as Gender Spectrum, The Way Out, Queer Gourmet, Dungeons + Dragons, Little Unicorns, and Pride Side.

Additionally, Youth Pride, Inc. offers professional development trainings and educational sessions in schools. It also leads the statewide LGBTQQ Youth Task Force, focusing on policy advocacy in education, health, and social services.

Events and Fundraising

One of the organization's major fundraising events is the annual gala, which supports its programs and services. The gala includes live music, awards, and a meal, bringing together supporters, staff, and board members.

Governance and Status

Youth Pride, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization, making all donations tax-deductible. The organization recently made news when its staff voted to unionize with SEIU 1199, marking a significant step in securing better working conditions for its employees.
