This morning, MMoME's team of staff, interns, and volunteers got an early start working with marine mammals-some of the team at our center caring for a hospital full of patients, others collecting and processing samples from deceased cases, and the response team spread out across the coast of Maine checking on a handful of cases reported to our hotline. Some pup cases were found to likely still be with mom and simply resting, others, like this one, were confirmed to have become separated and in need of care. This is our newest admit, marking number 10 for pup patients here-and it's still early in pup season. With the busy holiday weekend yet to come, we are flying through supplies needed to keep this facility open and running. To help with the next wave of patients that will need a place to go, we could use everything from wish list items (tape, laundry baskets, clothes drying rack, formula, glucose tabs, syringes, etc.), to monetary donations for everything not on the wish list, such as medications, fluids, etc. Anything helps! Healthy, strong harbor seal pups sleep hard and play hard-this morning we happened to capture these two between naps! These two patients, one from Scarborough Beach, Maine, and the other from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, are both abandoned harbor seal pups who experienced well-meaning but harmful human interaction, preventing their moms from returning for them. It has taken a few weeks of intensive care at our facility to get them feeling strong enough to act like this, but seeing it makes the many, many hours of effort invested worth it! There are a handful of other pup patients here still working on gainining strength and health to act like these two, but we really hope they will also get to have moments like this with continued care.
