Elders Share the Arts Inc
Elders Share the Arts (ESTA), founded in 1979, is an award-winning Brooklyn community arts organization whose mission is to use art to ignite the creativity of older adults and enhance the meaning and quality of their lives. ESTA addresses needs arising from the rapid aging of New York City’s population. In less than 10 years, older adults will outnumber youth. Many are looking for meaningful, creative ways to engage with their community. We need a major paradigm shift in the types of services delivered to communities, and ESTA’s Legacy Arts program, which serves isolated, low-income older adults, has been recognized as a model program fulfilling this mandate. Creative aging programs offer older adults opportunities to foster new relationships with others, break down the chronic isolation and passive existence of many, and unlock their creative potential. Our organization offers high-caliber arts programming that ignites creative expression, cultivates elders’ role as bearers of history and culture, and generates new pathways to connect them to their communities. As a pioneer of the field of creative aging, which focuses on the beneficial and powerful role of the arts in enhancing the quality of life for older adults, our organization is . We were one of four study sites for a national research project conducted by Gene Cohen, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Center on Aging, Health & Humanities at George Washington University. The study, titled “The Impact of Professionally Conducted Cultural Programs on Older Adults,” found that professionally conducted arts programs had a significant impact on the well-being of older adults.In addition, ESTA places a central emphasis on training and encouraging the replication of its model programs locally and nationally. ESTA has conducted professional development workshops for staff at the NYC Board of Education, the NYC Department for the Aging, United Jewish Association, and SEIU 1199 on how to plan, implement, and evaluate creative arts programs for elders and intergenerational groups utilizing ESTA’s unique creative arts methodology. What drives ESTA is the power of creativity and of engaging life through art, since art-making can create community and build connections that go far deeper than those resulting from passive diversions. Because we are intentional about teaching serious art skills, we work with professional artists. We know that the power of creativity can challenge and nourish the people we serve, many of whom have never made art before. We have seen how rigorous instruction enables them to rise to the level of authentic creative experience. And we believe that by giving voice to our elders through the arts that the dynamic of a community can be changed, thus building a more equitable society for all.
