✨ New today on Journeys in Medicine: “Caring for Underserved Populations in Jamaica and the United States” by Dr. Karecia Byfield. 🌎🩺 Dr. Byfield is a PGY-2 from Jamaica training in Internal Medicine at Jefferson Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. In 2020, Dr. Byfield co-founded in her home country the healthcare nonprofit @margin2center in response to her experiences caring for patients in resource-limited settings. When she decided to pursue graduate medical education training in the United States a few years later, Dr. Byfield sought out an environment where she could continue to serve vulnerable communities in need of equitable healthcare. “While the available resources and cultural backgrounds differed from what I had experienced in Jamaica, the fundamental principles of patient-centered care remained unchanged,” Dr. Byfield writes. “I once assisted the parent of an adult child with a disability by rescheduling appointments he missed because of a lack of time and finances. Overcome with gratitude, he later returned to thank me after his child finally received a long-awaited procedure.” This National Minority Health Month, Journeys in Medicine is proud to feature the story of Dr. Byfield, a J-1 physician dedicated to, in her own words, “advocating for all patients to receive the support they need, regardless of their circumstances.” Read Dr. Byfield’s story here: https://www.ecfmg.org/journeysinmedicine/caring-for-underserved-populations-in-jamaica-and-the-united-states #journeysinmedicine #intealth #j1physicians #ECFMG (fb)
