The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is a prominent non-profit organization based on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, dedicated to preserving the legacy of Maria Mitchell, a pioneering astronomer, naturalist, and educator. Founded in 1902, the MMA aims to honor Mitchell's contributions to science and her commitment to educational opportunities for women.
History
Maria Mitchell (1818-1889) was the first professional woman astronomer in the United States and gained international acclaim after discovering a comet in 1847. Her achievements included becoming the first female professor of astronomy at Vassar College and the first woman inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
