NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital is a nonprofit, academic medical center located in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The hospital is part of the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System and is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine.
Facilities and Services
The hospital has a capacity of approximately 591 beds, including bassinets[3]. It annually serves about 42,000 inpatients and handles around 500,000 outpatient visits[3]. NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital offers a wide range of specialized care services, including advanced and minimally invasive surgery, advanced otolaryngology, asthma and lung disease management, cancer care, cardiology and cardiac surgery, diabetes and endocrine disorders treatment, digestive and liver disorders management, healthy aging programs, neurosciences, orthopedic medicine and surgery, vascular medicine and surgery, and women's health services[3].
Education and Training
As a major teaching hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital hosts nine graduate medical education residency programs and six fellowship programs[4]. It is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine and also serves as a teaching site for SUNY Downstate College of Medicine[3].
History
Founded in 1881, NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital was the first Methodist hospital in the United States[3]. It became part of the New York Hospital Care Network in 1993 and, after the merger of New York Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital in 1998, it became part of the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System[3]. In 2016, the hospital officially changed its name to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, solidifying its affiliation with the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital network[3].
Recent Developments
In March 2021, the hospital opened the Center for Community Health, a six-story ambulatory care center on 6th Street in Park Slope, marking significant investment in community health services[3]. This development is part of ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare access and quality in Brooklyn.
