North American Submarine Cable Association

The North American Submarine Cable Association (NASCA) is a nonprofit organization founded in October 2000, focusing on companies involved in the ownership, installation, and maintenance of submarine telecommunications cables in North American waters.

Mission and Activities

NASCA serves as a forum for its member companies to discuss and address technical, legal, and policy issues related to submarine cables. Key areas of focus include:

  • Standards and Procedures: NASCA helps establish standards for obtaining government approvals for new cable installations.
  • Industry Coordination: The organization facilitates working relationships with other marine industries to ensure safe coexistence and minimize potential conflicts.
  • Public Education: NASCA promotes awareness about the importance and operational aspects of submarine cables, highlighting their critical role in international communications.
Cable System Routes and Safety

NASCA maintains and updates maps of its member cable system routes, often overlaying these on NOAA charts. This helps stakeholders assess the proximity of submarine cables to planned coastal projects and ensure the continued safe operation of these critical infrastructure assets.

Cable Burial Experience

In response to past damage from fishing and marine activities, NASCA has shared best practices in cable burial. Since 2000, cables are typically buried 5 to 6 feet below the seabed where conditions permit, significantly reducing damage rates.

Future Directions

NASCA is seeking recognition as a nonprofit trade association under Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code. This status will further solidify its position as a leading voice for the submarine cable industry in North America.
