6 Reasons to Join the ALLEX Fellow Program (Part 2/2) 4) Set yourself up for a Teaching Assistantship Award: If you are thinking about graduate school in the United States, you know how expensive tuition, room, and board is. A common way to pay for graduate school is to work as a teaching assistant. Teaching assistants work as instructors at a university in exchange for financial support (tuition, room and board food waivers) to pursue a degree. University teaching assistantships are rare and are usually quite difficult for international applicants to obtain. However, applicants who have teaching experience, especially university level teaching experience with the ALLEX program, are more likely to be awarded a teaching assistantship. This is true of applicants applying for a language-related Master’s or Ph.D., but is applicable for all majors. Master’s and Ph.D. admission committees prefer to hire teaching assistants who have experience teaching university students. They ALLEX Fellow Program provides you with formal training and a year’s teaching experience – an advantage that few other graduate school applicants will have. 5) Prepare for a Job in the U.S. as a Language Teacher: Do you have a dream to work in the United States as a language teacher? Or perhaps return to your country to teach language? The ALLEX Fellow Program can help make it happen. Many types of people join the Fellow Program. Some participants want to return to their country after the program to be a language teacher and they take the teacher training program to improve their teaching skills, hone them at the host university over the next year, and then return home with a renewed sense of energy and perspective on teaching. Some participants already have a Master’s degree and use the program to gain teaching experience at a U.S. university before applying for language teaching jobs in the United States. It is much easier to obtain a teaching job in the U.S. after having a year experience teaching at a U.S. university than it would be to apply directly from your home country. The training program will give you an important professional network to start your job search as well as supporters who may be willing to introduce you to opportunities or write letters of recommendation. Many participants have landed jobs as lecturers at U.S. universities, or as teachers at high schools and elementary schools, sometimes with H1-B visas that sometimes lead to green cards and permanent residency status. 6) Gain a New Perspective on the World: Finally, the Fellow Program gives participants a new perspective on the world! By taking dual responsibilities as both a teacher and a student, you will meet many new people, engage in new experiences, and meet new challenges.
