Overview

The Putnam-Indian Field School Inc is a nonprofit organization dedicated to early childhood education and social development. Founded in 1978 through the merger of two respected nursery schools, it offers a co-educational preschool experience for children from toddlerhood through pre-kindergarten[2][5].

Mission and Philosophy

The school's mission is to inspire confidence, curiosity, creativity, and a sense of community in every child. It follows a play-based, child-centered approach, emphasizing active involvement, exploration, and discovery to foster learning and development[2][3]. This approach encourages children to make choices, experiment, investigate, discover, and create, promoting sound social and emotional development[1][5].

Programs and Facilities

The school provides an engaging environment with activities such as music, dance, rhythmic play, painting, sculpting, and sensory play. These programs are designed to enhance self-expression, cognitive growth, fine motor skills, and creativity[2]. The facilities include eight light-filled classrooms, a science room, gymnasium, art studios, lunchroom, and kitchen. The outdoor campus features five age-appropriate play areas and extensive gardens, promoting a connection with nature[3][5].

Accreditation and Recognition

Putnam-Indian Field School is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and was recognized as a Connecticut Green LEAF School in 2016, highlighting its commitment to sustainability[2].

Financial and Governance

The organization operates with a Board of Trustees composed of school parents and is registered as a 501(c)(3), allowing donations to be tax-deductible[1][4]. The school primarily relies on program services for revenue, with significant expenditures on staff salaries to support its educational programs[4].

Community Involvement

Parents and families play a crucial role in the school, with opportunities for involvement through the Board of Trustees and parent committees. This engagement ensures strong communication between families and educators, contributing to a supportive learning environment[3].
