American College of Emergency Physicians
The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) is a professional organization representing more than 38,000 emergency physicians, emergency medicine residents, and medical students in the United States. It was founded in 1968 with the primary goal of improving the quality of emergency care through various initiatives such as continuing education, research, and public education.
Mission and Activities
ACEP promotes high-quality emergency care and serves as a leading advocate for emergency physicians, their patients, and the public. It advances emergency medicine by funding research, developing evidence-based clinical policies, and providing public education on disaster preparedness. ACEP also offers industry-leading continuing medical education through conferences, online training, and publications.
Advocacy and Policy
On a federal level, ACEP is actively involved in advocacy, focusing on issues such as protecting patients from surprise bills, enhancing access to mental health care, addressing drug shortages, and improving appropriate pain management. Additionally, ACEP works to reduce administrative burdens that may impact patient care and ensures fair billing practices.
Publications and Education
ACEP publishes "Annals of Emergency Medicine," a peer-reviewed scientific journal that features original research, clinical reports, and case studies related to emergency medicine. The organization also offers a home study series and self-assessment examinations to support the continuing education needs of emergency physicians.
History and Development
In 1979, emergency medicine was officially recognized as the 23rd medical specialty in the United States, marking a significant milestone for ACEP. The American Board of Emergency Medicine, which certifies emergency medicine specialists, was established around this time, with the first certification exam administered in 1980. Starting from January 1, 2000, criteria-based membership requirements were implemented, making board certification or residency training in emergency medicine a prerequisite for active membership.
Emergency Medicine Foundation
ACEP established the Emergency Medicine Foundation (EMF) in 1973 as a means to provide emergency medicine with a strong educational and research base. The EMF works in partnership with researchers and institutions to provide patient-centered research in emergency medicine.
