To be a cultural and educational community resource

Watertown Children's Theatre Inc.
Overview

Watertown Children's Theatre Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Watertown, Massachusetts, and is a program of the Mosesian Center for the Arts. Founded in 1983 by Dinah Lane, it has been dedicated to providing young individuals with extensive opportunities in theater arts. The organization aims to foster a community that celebrates youth, performance, and the arts by offering a range of educational and artistic experiences.

Mission and Programs

Watertown Children's Theatre's mission includes being a cultural and educational resource for the community, providing theater experiences for children of diverse cultures and ages, and promoting self-discovery, creativity, confidence, and group responsibility in a non-competitive environment. The theatre offers classes, workshops, private lessons, vacation week, and summer experiences, as well as after-school programming. These programs cover a wide range of topics from creating ideas to performing on stage and working backstage.

Productions

Watertown Children's Theatre features several types of productions each season, including musicals and plays. The Main Stage Musical Series allows participants to develop advanced theater skills in singing, acting, and dancing under the guidance of experienced directors and choreographers. The Junior Players program includes opportunities for younger participants to engage in youth musicals and focuses on ensemble skills in musical productions. The Teen Musical Institute and Teen Acting Intensive cater to older students, offering more specialized training in musical theater and acting techniques.

History and Development

Initially based at Watertown High School, the theatre expanded its programming after moving to the Mosesian Center for the Arts in 2005. In 2013, Watertown Children's Theatre formally merged with the Mosesian Center, integrating its programs with those of the visual arts, resulting in a multidisciplinary approach to arts education. This merger allowed for the development of more innovative and inclusive programs, including accessible performances incorporating American Sign Language (ASL) and sensory-friendly elements.

Impact and Community Engagement

Watertown Children's Theatre serves as a cultural and educational hub for Watertown and surrounding communities. By engaging young individuals and their families in the arts, it plays a significant role in fostering community spirit and creative development. The organization's commitment to inclusivity and accessibility ensures that a wide range of participants can benefit from its offerings.

Partnerships and Facilities

As part of the Mosesian Center for the Arts, Watertown Children's Theatre benefits from state-of-the-art facilities, including the Charles Mosesian Theater and the Dinah Lane Theater. These facilities host not only educational programs but also professional performances and events that enrich the local arts scene.
