Meucci is credited with early experiments in voice transmission over wires, a precursor to the development of the telephone. He also provided refuge to Giuseppe Garibaldi, the famous Italian revolutionary, who lived in the house from 1851 to 1853. Garibaldi, known for his role in Italian unification, came to the United States after being forced to flee Italy.

The museum, established in 1956, honors the lives and contributions of both Meucci and Garibaldi. It highlights their significant roles in Italian history and innovation, as well as their mutual support and friendship during periods of exile and struggle.
