On May 28, 1918, the First Republic of Armenia was founded, officially declaring Armenian independence and planting the seed of freedom for generations of Armenians to come. Today, as Armenia’s territorial integrity remains under threat, we remember and recognize the importance of a continued struggle against oppression and occupation until the entire Armenian nation is free. On this day, we honor the courage and resilience of the Armenian people during the battles of Sardarabad, Bash Abaran, and Karakilisa: three pivotal victories that saved the Armenian nation and helped secure its independence from the oppressive Ottoman Rule. Rising from the ashes of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 perpetrated by the Ottoman Turks, under the command of Generals Tro, Karekin Njdeh, and Antranig Ozanian, Armenians halted Ottoman advances and resisted further persecution with unmatched bravery. These battles were more than military victories, they were the birth of hope, as they immediately preceded the formation of the First Republic of Armenia on May 28, 1918. (fb)
