Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA, commonly known as the BPOE or simply The Elks, is a U.S.-based fraternal organization founded on February 16, 1868, in New York City. Initially organized as a social club for minstrel show performers, it evolved into a nationwide brotherhood dedicated to community service, patriotism, and mutual aid.

History

The BPOE was founded by actor Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian, a British expatriate and member of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes. The initial impetus for forming the group was the death of a fellow performer, which highlighted the need for communal support among entertainers. By December 1868, the group had adopted its current name, and by 1890, it had established 173 lodges across the United States.

Mission and Pillars

The organization is guided by four core pillars: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. The BPOE is renowned for its philanthropic programs, which include supporting veterans, offering youth scholarships through initiatives like the "Hoop Shoot" contest, and providing disaster relief. The Elks also foster a strong sense of patriotism, participating in various national events and observances.

Membership and Inclusivity

Membership in the BPOE is open to all U.S. citizens over the age of 21 who believe in God. Historically exclusive, the organization has become more inclusive and now welcomes members from diverse backgrounds. As of recent years, the BPOE has over 750,000 members across approximately 1,928 local lodges.

Traditions and Ceremonies

A significant tradition within the BPOE is the nightly "Hour of Recollection" toast, held at 11:00 p.m. to honor absent members. Each lodge is governed by an Exalted Ruler, and officers wear formal regalia during initiation ceremonies. The organization's symbol is the elk, chosen for its majestic and peaceful nature, reflecting the values of strength and community.

Philanthropy and Impact

The Elks have a long history of charitable giving, with donations exceeding $2.69 billion to date. The organization is one of the largest private providers of college scholarships in the United States. Its charitable efforts are funded by its members, who contribute time and resources without compensation, embodying a strong spirit of volunteerism.

Headquarters and National Activities

The national headquarters of the BPOE is located in Chicago, Illinois, at the Elks National Veterans Memorial, which honors Elks who served in World War I. The organization remains actively engaged in promoting American values and supporting community programs nationwide.
