The pièce de résistance of Mechanics 2025 was the construction of a "back harness" of the type described by John Duncan in his 1807 Practical and Descriptive Essays on the Art of Weaving. The back harness is a set of leaves controlling groups of warp yarns that then pass individually through long-eyed heddles on the leaves of the front harness. This double harness arrangement multiplies the shedding capabilities of the mounting, giving the four leaves of each harness the shedding power of sixteen leaves for weaving twill damask on an ordinary loom.
