September 1, 1939 was the beginning of the end for Esther’s family—the German invasion of Poland that marked the start of WWII. Esther had heard that German soldiers had arrived in her village of Mniszek, so she and a couple of friends went to her grandparents’ house at the entrance to the village. There, they watched as a soldier dismounted his horse to grab her grandfather’s beard and cut it off with his sword.

Maybe those of you who refrain from eating chametz, or leavened bread, during Passover have grown tired of eating matzos by now. But there was no such thing as too much matzo for the women of Esther’s home village of Mniszek, who she remembered in this scene, making enough matzo to satisfy their entire families. Despite this being the last Passover in the village, Esther remembered only the joy and excitement of the occasion.
