National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), often referred to as DAR, is a nonprofit lineage society that emphasizes historic preservation, education, patriotism, and community service. The organization is dedicated to women who are direct descendants of individuals involved in the American Revolutionary War era, contributing to the cause of independence.
History
Founded on October 11, 1890, the organization was established by four pioneering women: Mary Smith Lockwood, Eugenia Washington, Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Mary Desha. The formation of DAR was prompted by the exclusion of women from the Sons of the American Revolution, another patriotic organization dedicated to descendants of American Revolution participants. DAR was officially chartered by Congress on December 2, 1896.
Membership and Eligibility
To be eligible for membership, applicants must be at least 18 years old and demonstrate direct lineage to a patriot of the American Revolution. The DAR defines a patriot as anyone who contributed to the cause of American independence during the Revolutionary period, including soldiers, scouts, and other supporters.
Objectives
The DAR operates through various divisions focusing on education, historical preservation, and patriotism. Key initiatives include:
-
Education: The society supports several schools for underprivileged youth and offers scholarships and educational programs. Notably, it contributes significantly to schools like Crossnore School and Kate Duncan Smith DAR School.
-
Historic Preservation: DAR maintains a genealogical library at its headquarters and supports the preservation of American artifacts and historical sites.
-
Patriotic Activities: Members participate in various projects, such as honoring veterans and supporting naturalization ceremonies.
Philanthropy and Community Service
DAR members are involved in extensive community service, including volunteer work at veterans' hospitals and support for active military personnel. They also engage in programs to promote the U.S. Constitution and encourage patriotism among young people.
Structure and Chapters
With over 190,000 members across the United States and other countries, DAR operates through a network of local chapters. These chapters often sponsor educational events, historic preservation projects, and community service initiatives tailored to their regions.
Publications and Exhibits
DAR publishes various materials, including historical guides and manuals. The organization also maintains exhibits showcasing American history and art, featuring items from its collections.
Affiliations
DAR is affiliated with the Children of the American Revolution, a youth organization focused on similar ideals.
