Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity
Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, commonly referred to as Pi Kappa Alpha (ΠΚΑ) or Pike, is a US-based nonprofit social fraternity founded at the University of Virginia in 1868. The fraternity is dedicated to developing men of integrity, intellect, and high moral character, fostering lifelong fraternal experiences.
History
Pi Kappa Alpha was founded on March 1, 1868, in Room 47 of the West Range at the University of Virginia by six graduate students: Frederick Southgate Taylor, Littleton Waller Tazewell, James Benjamin Sclater Jr., Robertson Howard, Julian Edward Wood, and William Alexander. The fraternity's mission is the promotion of brotherly love and kind feeling, as stated in its Preamble. Early expansion included the establishment of the Beta chapter at Davidson College on March 1, 1869.
By 1889, facing decline with only four active chapters, the fraternity underwent significant restructuring at the Hampden–Sydney Convention, adopting a new governance system that revitalized its growth. This period is often referred to as the "junior founding" of Pi Kappa Alpha. Over time, the fraternity grew nationally and internationally, removing sectarian restrictions and becoming open to diverse membership.
