Independent Order of Odd Fellows

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) is a non-political, non-sectarian international fraternal order founded in the United States in 1819 by Thomas Wildey. It evolved from the Order of Odd Fellows established in England during the 18th century. The IOOF is known for its charitable efforts and fraternal activities centered around the principles of Friendship, Love, and Truth.

History

Thomas Wildey, who had previously joined the Odd Fellows in England in 1804, emigrated to the United States in 1817. On April 26, 1819, Wildey and four associates founded Washington Lodge No. 1 in Baltimore, Maryland, marking the official beginning of the IOOF in North America. Initially, the lodge received its charter from the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity in England but became independent in 1842 due to disputes over governance and authority.

The IOOF is significant for being the first national fraternity to integrate women when it introduced the Daughters of Rebekah in 1851. This auxiliary organization was established based on the Rebekah Degree, created under the initiative of Schuyler Colfax, the 17th Vice President of the United States. The Rebekah degree emphasizes stories of courageous and compassionate women from traditional biblical writings.

Purpose and Activities

The IOOF is dedicated to social welfare and charitable activities, aligning with its motto "Visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead, and educate the orphan." Members work together to provide mutual support, engage in community service, and promote goodwill among people of all backgrounds.

Structure and Membership

The IOOF has grown significantly since its inception, with approximately 600,000 members distributed across about 10,000 lodges in 26 countries. It maintains inter-fraternal relations with the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity, its historical parent organization in the UK.

Governance

The IOOF operates under a hierarchical structure, with a Sovereign Grand Lodge overseeing subordinate State and local lodges. The organization is led by a Sovereign Grand Master, assisted by a Deputy Sovereign Grand Master and other officers.

Diversity and Inclusion

Historically, the IOOF limited its membership to white men, but it removed its racial restrictions in 1971. In 2001, the order voted to allow women to join the Odd Fellows directly, further expanding its inclusivity.
