The mission of Gilda's Club Rochester is to create welcoming communities of free support for everyone living with cancer – men, women, teens and children – along with their families and friends.  Our innovative program is an essential complement to medical care, providing networking and support groups, workshops, education and social activities.

Gilda's Club Rochester
Overview

Gilda's Club Rochester, now part of the Cancer Support Community at Gilda's Club Rochester, is a nonprofit organization providing social and emotional support to individuals and families affected by cancer. The organization offers a range of free programs, including support groups, educational workshops, art classes, exercise programs, and community events.

History

Gilda's Club Rochester traces its roots back to 1935 when the American Society for the Control of Cancer was founded in Rochester. Over the years, it underwent several name changes, becoming the Monroe County Cancer Association in 1959, the Monroe County Cancer and Leukemia Association in 1963, and later the United Cancer Council of the Genesee/Finger Lakes Area in 1977. In 1987, it became Cancer Action, Inc. before joining the Gilda's Club network in 2000. In 2021, it was renamed Cancer Support Community Rochester, but in 2022, it adopted its current name to better reflect its mission and programs.

Mission

The organization is dedicated to uplifting and strengthening those impacted by cancer by providing support, fostering compassionate communities, and breaking down barriers to care. It operates on a nonresidential basis and offers services in a welcoming, homelike environment, characterized by its signature red doors, symbolizing the vibrancy of Gilda Radner, the organization's namesake.

Programs and Services
  • Support Groups: These include ongoing support for cancer patients, their families, and friends.
  • Educational Workshops: Sessions are led by experts in cancer and wellness, focusing on education, prevention, and management.
  • Community Events: Hosting social activities and fundraising events like auctions and charity balls to raise awareness and funds for cancer support services.
  • Creative Programs: Offering art, cooking, and exercise classes to promote holistic well-being.
Impact

Gilda's Club Rochester serves the Greater Rochester area, providing over 1,200 free programs annually and receiving thousands of visits. It relies heavily on community events and fundraising to continue its mission, as it receives no government funding. These events not only raise crucial funds but also help build a supportive community for those affected by cancer.
