Overview

The Inter-Religious Foundation for Community Organization Inc., commonly referred to as IFCO, is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization founded in 1967 by progressive church leaders and activists. It is designated as a multi-issue national ecumenical agency, focusing on promoting justice and self-determination for oppressed peoples worldwide.

Mission and Activities

IFCO's mission is to support the development and sustainability of community organizations that address human and civil rights injustices. The organization provides technical assistance, trains community organizers, makes and administers grants, and leverages its global network to advance social and economic justice. IFCO's work encompasses both domestic and international issues, including civil and human rights, education, housing, health care, women's rights, farmworkers' rights, and Native Americans' rights.

History and Projects

IFCO was established as the first national foundation directed and controlled by people of color, serving as a bridge between predominantly mainline churches and community groups run by people of color. One of its notable initiatives is Pastors for Peace, founded in 1988, which organizes humanitarian aid caravans to Latin America and the Caribbean. Pastors for Peace has delivered aid to countries such as Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Mexico.

Scholarship Program

IFCO administers the scholarship program for U.S. students to attend Cuba's Latin American School of Medicine, as chosen by former Cuban President Fidel Castro due to its prophetic work in solidarity with Cuba.

Fiscal Sponsorship

IFCO offers fiscal sponsorship services to a variety of projects, including disaster relief, economic development, education, and political advocacy focusing on social justice. It charges a 10% administrative fee for these services. The organization supports progressive grassroots projects committed to social justice work both domestically and internationally.

Leadership and Structure

IFCO's leadership includes a diverse board of directors from various religious and community backgrounds. The organization is structured to ensure that its mission of advancing social justice is implemented through a network of community organizations and policy groups.

Tax Status

Donations to IFCO are tax-deductible as it is classified as a religion-related, spiritual development organization under the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE).
