Central Square Church

Central Square Church is a nonprofit Christian organization located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was formed on June 19, 2020, through the merger of two historic churches: First Baptist Church of Cambridge and Cambridge Community Fellowship Church. Both churches had a long history of community service and spiritual leadership in Central Square.

History

First Baptist Church of Cambridge was established over 200 years ago and has been a cornerstone of the community, hosting notable figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Fanny Crosby. It has also served as a refuge for individuals struggling with homelessness and addiction. Cambridge Community Fellowship Church, founded in 1996, focused on promoting peace and values within the Central Square neighborhood.

Vision and Mission

Central Square Church's mission is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and serve the community. Its vision emphasizes empowering individuals through divine grace to encounter Jesus and be transformed by God's love. The church aims to foster a reconciling faith community that welcomes people from all walks of life, promoting healing, justice, and deepening relationships with one another and with God.

Affiliations

The church is an active member of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) and American Baptist Churches.

Building and Architecture

The church is housed in a historic building originally constructed in 1881 in the Gothic Revival style. The structure features a 184-foot spire and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. The building has undergone recent renovations, reopening in April 2022.

Ministries and Programs

Central Square Church offers various ministries, including traditional Sunday services, house churches for community-building, and children's programs. One notable initiative is the Traction Ministry, which focuses on resource sharing and mentoring to support individuals in achieving their goals and fostering interdependent living.

Community Involvement

The church engages actively in community events and has been involved in initiatives honoring Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. It continues to serve as a symbol of community and fellowship in Central Square.
