For more than five decades, Yugntruf - Youth for Yiddish has encouraged the active use of Yiddish among young people around the world. Founded in 1964 by renowned Yiddish linguist Dr. Mordkhe Schaechter, Yugntruf (“call to youth" in Yiddish) began as a way for college-aged Yiddish speakers to interact in a social and cultural Yiddish environment outside the classroom. Today Yugntruf – Youth for Yiddish encourages the spread and use of Yiddish as a living language among young people here and abroad, and promotes greater recognition of Yiddish as a living, modern language of the Jewish people, not as a cultural relic of bygone times.
