Horizon Wings
OUR MISSION AT HORIZON WINGS IS TO REHABILITATE BIRDS OF PREY FOR RELEASE INTO THE WILD IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THEIR POPULATION AND TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY TO ENHANCE AWARENESS OF THE ENVIRONMENT.
Horizon Wings
Horizon Wings is a United States nonprofit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of birds of prey and the education of the public on environmental and wildlife issues. Founded in 2001 by Mary-Beth Kaeser, it operates as a 501(c)(3) wildlife rehabilitation center specializing in raptors. The organization is based in Ashford, Connecticut.
History and Mission
Horizon Wings was established to provide care and rehabilitation for injured birds of prey that are native to the region. Its mission includes not only the treatment and release of raptors back into the wild but also the conservation of these species through public education. The organization also provides lifelong care to birds that cannot be released due to permanent injuries, utilizing them in educational programs to raise awareness and foster environmental stewardship.
Programs and Services
Horizon Wings offers a variety of educational programs and tours by appointment, aimed at increasing public understanding and appreciation of birds of prey and their role in the ecosystem. These programs include live presentations featuring birds that are permanently housed at the center due to their injuries.
The organization relies on fees from these educational programs, along with donations and grants, to fund its operations. Horizon Wings engages actively with community events and collaborates with local institutions such as libraries and nature trusts to extend its educational reach.
Funding and Support
Horizon Wings receives financial support through grants, donations, and program fees. Notable support has come from foundations such as The Douglas S and Barbara J Barrett Family Foundation and the GE Foundation, among others. For the fiscal year ending 2023, the organization reported revenues from grants and contributions totaling over $37,000, which are primarily directed towards program services.
Leadership
Mary-Beth Kaeser, the founder, serves as the president of Horizon Wings. She has led the organization since its inception, focusing on wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education without compensation.
Horizon Wings continues to serve as an important resource for the conservation of birds of prey in Connecticut, blending rehabilitation expertise with community education to support the preservation of these vital species.
