This week, our Land and Resource Management team completed an incredible, full-circle project: a composting outhouse for Binney Forest—built with wood harvested during the game of logging from the Simpson Nature Trail! Some of the lumber for the structure came from trees originally planted by students in the Vail Agricultural Program back in the early 1900s. Nearly a century later, our current students continued that legacy by selecting, harvesting, and milling those trees with help from alumnus Bruce Houghton ’72 and his Wood-Mizer portable sawmill. Piece by piece, the students built the structure in stages, culminating with the final assembly in the woods this week. This project highlights our commitment to sustainability—using local resources and honoring the history of the land.
