Artists Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz were prolific letter writers; over the course of their relationship, they exchanged more than 5,000 letters, totaling over 25,000 pages. @composerkevinputs was inspired by this trove of correspondence when writing “The Brightness of Light” for soprano Renée Fleming and baritone Rod Gilfry, who sing the words of O’Keeffe and Stieglitz. Fleming and Gilfry joined the NY Phil last weekend for the work’s New York Premiere, with visual projections by Wendall K. Harrington. Conductor Brett Mitchell, in his NY Phil debut, also led Ravel’s complete “Daphnis et Chloé,” featuring the New York Philharmonic Chorus directed by Malcolm J. Merriweather. The May 16 concert also marked the NY Phil’s annual tradition of honoring musicians who are retiring from the Orchestra or celebrating milestone anniversaries. This year, we salute horn player R. Allen Spanjer — retiring at the end of the 2024–25 season after 33 years of service — and Principal Harp Nancy Allen, celebrating her 25th anniversary. 📸: Brandon Patoc (fb)
