Center for a New American Security Inc
The Center for a New American Security Inc, abbreviated as CNAS, is an independent, bipartisan, nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. It was founded in 2007 by Michèle Flournoy and Kurt M. Campbell, with a mission to develop strong, pragmatic, and principled national security and defense policies. CNAS focuses on a wide range of national security issues, including terrorism, irregular warfare, the future of the U.S. military, the rise of Asia, and the implications of natural resources on national security. Despite its stated bipartisanship, CNAS has historically had strong ties to the Democratic Party, with several of its members serving in key positions within Democratic administrations.
Leadership and Governance
CNAS is led by Richard Fontaine, who serves as its CEO. The organization's board of directors comprises prominent figures from the fields of politics, finance, and the military. Notable members include Richard Armitage, Douglas A. Beck, and Jeh Johnson. The board also has an advisory component that contributes to the development of CNAS's research and expands its community of interest.
Activities and Research
CNAS engages policymakers, experts, and the public through innovative research and analysis to shape and elevate the national security debate. It publishes reports and conducts research programs focused on topics such as the U.S. defense industrial base, strategic containment strategies against China, and the implications of trade policies on national security.
Funding and Controversy
CNAS receives funding from various corporate donors, including defense contractors like Northrop Grumman, Chevron, Amazon, and Google. This has led to criticism from certain media outlets, which accuse CNAS of promoting militarism and pushing Democratic policymakers towards more aggressive military strategies. CNAS has also faced scrutiny for its receipt of foreign funding, which has been alleged to influence its advocacy on specific geopolitical issues.
Impact and Recognition
CNAS has been recognized as a leading think tank on military affairs, particularly during the Obama administration. Many of its former employees have transitioned into government roles, exemplifying the organization's influence on U.S. national security policy. Despite criticisms, CNAS remains a significant voice in shaping national security discourse in Washington.
