Eagle River Triathlon Inc.

Eagle River Triathlon Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to hosting triathlon events, including the Eagle River Triathlon. This organization is committed to providing racing opportunities for adults and youth of all abilities.

History

The Eagle River Triathlon was founded by Mark Ramp in 1993. Initially, the event saw unexpected success with 225 participants in its first year, despite initial plans for only 100. Over the years, the triathlon grew significantly, adding a kids' race to its program. Mark Ramp's leadership continued until 2002, during which the event expanded to include 500 adults and 250 children by its peak under his management. After a brief hiatus due to the event not being held in 2003, Ed Sniffen took over in 2004. Later, Missy Anderson Roberts became involved, helping to stabilize and grow the event further.

Events and Courses

The Eagle River Triathlon features both Olympic and Sprint triathlon distances, along with a Duathlon option. The Olympic distance includes a 1500-meter swim, a 24.8-mile bike ride, while the Sprint and Duathlon offer a 500-yard swim and a 12.4-mile bike. The events take place in Chugiak, Alaska, approximately 20 miles north of Anchorage. Notable for its scenic views and challenging bike courses, the triathlon attracts a diverse range of participants, from new athletes to elite competitors.

Community Impact

Beyond hosting races, Eagle River Triathlon Inc. emphasizes community engagement and support. Long-term partnerships with local businesses contribute to the event's success and sustainability. The triathlon also fosters a family-friendly atmosphere, offering races for children and promoting a participatory environment for athletes of all skill levels.

Current Status

In 2025, the Eagle River Triathlon is recognized as the USAT Alaska State Championship, further solidifying its position as a significant triathlon event in Alaska.
