Rabbi Sergio Bergman’s Message on the Expansion of Settlements: “We face the challenges of reaching an agreement for the release of the abductees, burying the deceased with dignity, and ensuring the safe return of IDF soldiers. The vast majority of citizens share these goals. However, the government—becoming increasingly unrepresentative and disconnected from the values of the Megilat Ha’Atzmaut (Declaration of Independence)—continues to expand settlements. We remain committed to the vision of Medinat Israel forged by its founders, and we peacefully yet firmly resist the actions of a government whose policies contradict the values and principles of a pluralistic, democratic, and inclusive state. We are faithful to the ideals dreamed of by the visionaries: to be a light unto the nations, and to the example set by the pioneers who, together with the generations that followed, made Israel’s daily miracle possible. That light, which should shine from Zion, is now eclipsed by the mediocrity of those who prioritize personal and sectarian interests—especially those who benefit from budgets and power while failing to fulfill their civic responsibilities or serve in the defense of Medinat Israel. Israel deserves a better government. The Jewish people deserve leaders who inspire pride—not shame.
