Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre
Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre is a U.S. non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Spanish dance, particularly flamenco. Founded in 1965 by Maria Alba, the company was later revitalized under the direction of Eva Lucena. The organization's mission is to entertain and educate audiences about Spanish culture through dance, drama, and music.
History and Development
The company was originally founded by Maria Alba, a renowned performer of seguiriya and other Spanish dance forms. Eva Lucena, who co-directed the Spanish Dance Theater in New York with Alba, became a key figure in Alborada's evolution after Alba's passing in 1992. In 1995, Lucena established Alborada in New Jersey, renaming it in honor of her mentor. Alborada was incorporated as a non-profit in New Jersey in September 1995.
Artistic Vision and Programs
Alborada's artistic vision encompasses a broad range of Spanish dances, including flamenco, Gypsy flamenco, and traditional regional and classical dances. The troupe creates dance dramas inspired by Spanish poetry and history, such as dramatizations of the works of Federico García Lorca. The company's performances are designed to be both entertaining and educational, aiming to preserve regional dances that might otherwise be lost in the U.S.
Community Outreach and Education
Alborada actively engages with communities across New Jersey and New York through extensive outreach programs. These include master classes, lecture demonstrations at schools, senior centers, and community libraries. The organization also participates in various cultural festivals, such as the Feria de Sevilla Flamenco Dance & Spanish Cultural Arts Festival. Alborada is part of the Arts-In-Education Programs at the Morris Arts Council, further enhancing its educational impact.
Notable Performances and Recognition
One of Alborada's notable works, "The Granada - The End," choreographed by Eva Lucena, was nominated for a National Endowment for the Arts dance award in 1998. The company has been featured on NJN TV and PBS NJ, with performances described as "a whirl in drama and color!" by The New York Times.
Impact and Community Engagement
By sharing the passion and depth of Spanish culture, Alborada inspires community involvement and appreciation for dance as a means of expression. The company's performances reach a wide audience annually, making Spanish dance accessible and engaging for people of all ages. Alborada's dedication to cultural education and preservation has earned it recognition as a vibrant part of New Jersey's cultural landscape.
