Foreign Policy Association, Inc.
The Foreign Policy Association, Inc. is a U.S. non-profit educational organization established in 1918 as the "League of Free Nations Association." Its mission is to promote awareness, understanding, and informed opinion on U.S. foreign policy and global issues by engaging citizens and facilitating discussions around these topics.
History
The Foreign Policy Association was founded during World War I by 41 Americans to support President Woodrow Wilson's efforts to establish a League of Nations, as proposed in his Fourteen Points. Despite the League of Nations' eventual failure, the FPA continued to evolve. It was reconstituted in 1923 and has since become a leading advocate for U.S. involvement in global governance and citizen education in international affairs.
Programs and Activities
- Public Forums and Events: The organization hosts numerous forums, including the renowned Annual FPA Dinner, the World Leadership Forum, and Town Hall meetings. These events feature prominent global leaders discussing pressing international issues in the New York City metropolitan area.
- Great Decisions Program: Launched in 1954, this program is the nation's largest discussion series on U.S. foreign policy. It includes a briefing book, video series, and national opinion ballots that are annually presented to key government officials and media.
- Media and Outreach: The FPA employs diverse communication strategies, from print to radio and television. Its Great Decisions Television Series and podcast series provide comprehensive coverage of global affairs.
- Educational Initiatives: FPA materials are used in over 1,100 college and university campuses. The organization also supports high school education through its Great Decisions Teacher Training Institute.
Impact
Over the years, the FPA has been a platform for U.S. presidents and numerous international leaders to address the American public. Its role in facilitating informed discussions on U.S. foreign policy has contributed significantly to public engagement in global issues. By fostering a network of World Affairs Councils across the United States, the FPA extends its influence nationwide.
Publications and Awards
The FPA publishes several series, including the Headline Series, which has been ongoing since 1935. The organization also offers awards such as the Foreign Policy Association Medal, recognizing individuals who promote international understanding, and the Corporate Social Responsibility Award for good corporate citizenship.
Governance and Funding
The organization operates entirely on private funding without government support. It is led by a President and CEO, currently Dr. Noel V. Lateef, who has been at the helm longer than any other president in the organization's history. The FPA remains a nonpartisan entity dedicated to enriching the foreign policy debate in the United States.
