The Peaceful Families Project was founded in 2000 by Sharifa Alkhateeb, a pioneering figure in advocating for the civil rights of Muslims in the U.S., particularly women's rights. Alkhateeb conducted the first national study on physical violence among Muslims in the U.S. in 1993, revealing that 10% of Muslims experienced physical abuse, a figure comparable to national statistics and other faith groups.
Mission
The organization's mission is to work towards ending all types of abuse in Muslim families by increasing awareness about the dynamics of domestic violence. It achieves this through a holistic approach that includes community education, training, technical assistance, and research. The project collaborates with faith leaders, community members, social service professionals, activists, educators, mental health providers, medical professionals, attorneys, and youth leaders.
Work and Achievements
The Peaceful Families Project has been a leader in developing educational resources for Muslim audiences. Notable achievements include publishing the edited volume Change From Within: Diverse Perspectives on Domestic Violence in Muslim Communities and co-producing the documentary Garments for One Another: Ending Domestic Violence in Muslim Families in collaboration with the FaithTrust Institute.
In 2024, the organization sponsored numerous local and national events to raise awareness and advocate for change, engaging over 200 participants.
