Avian Haven
Avian Haven is a nonprofit wild bird rehabilitation center located in Freedom, Maine. The organization was founded in 1999 by Marc Payne and Diane Winn and is dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of orphaned, sick, and injured wild birds with the goal of releasing them back into the wild.
Mission and Objectives
Avian Haven's primary mission is to provide comprehensive medical care and rehabilitation to wild birds, ensuring their safe return to their natural habitats. This includes offering care for birds across a wide range of species, including endangered and threatened species. The organization emphasizes a holistic approach to rehabilitation, using both on-site facilities and a network of volunteers and other rehabilitators.
Facilities and Services
Avian Haven operates with well-equipped facilities tailored to mimic natural environments, facilitating the rehabilitation of birds of various sizes, from hummingbirds to eagles. The center includes multiple outdoor flight cages and an indoor aquatic bird facility, along with a three-season outdoor pond. Advanced medical capabilities, such as radiography and surgery, are provided on-site with the assistance of consulting veterinarians.
Impact and Reach
Since its inception, Avian Haven has grown significantly, treating more than 35,000 birds from over 100 species. Its annual patient load has increased from approximately 300 birds to around 3,600. This growth positions Avian Haven as one of the largest avian rehabilitation centers in New England. The organization collaborates with local wildlife biologists, game wardens, other rehabilitators, and the public to receive and care for birds in need.
Community and Education
In addition to rehabilitation, Avian Haven engages in community education and awareness programs. These efforts aim to enhance public understanding of wild birds and promote avian conservation. The organization also participates in research and educational activities for wildlife professionals on both local and national levels.
Operations and Support
Avian Haven relies heavily on a team of dedicated staff members, volunteers, and interns. The center fosters a collaborative environment to ensure the highest standards of care and operational efficiency. The organization's activities are supported by donations, which are crucial for maintaining its high-quality care services.
