From Roots to Legacy — My Journey Grounded in Education and Community For me, Legal Outreach wasn’t just a stop along my career — it became a lifelong commitment. Why Legal Outreach? Born into a family of educators, I grew up believing in the power of knowledge. As a Columbia law student in 1984, I connected with Legal Outreach, drawn to its mission of transforming the lives of students through academic skill building and career exposure. It wasn’t just about legal rights — it was about building confidence and ensuring students have an opportunity to realize their fullest potential. Staying Connected Upon graduating, I remained connected. My friendship with founder, James O’Neal, grew into mentorship, leadership, and a board role — allowing me to give more than time. I shared my network, my resources, and most importantly, my heart. A Family Legacy What began as personal passion became a family tradition. My wife, Lorraine, a partner at Orrick, joined the advisory board, ensuring her law firm supported Legal Outreach’s educational efforts. Our 4 daughters, having attended Princeton in pursuit of careers in law, medicine, education, and business all worked with the program and are committed to serving underserved communities. Giving back became part of who we are. Why It Still Matters I see myself in today’s students — especially young Black men choosing academics over the easier path. I often reflect on my own journey: once a high school and college athlete focused on running track, I realized “filling my mind with information became more important than being on the track.” I stayed the course, and now I help others do the same.
