Description

Penfield Public Library

The Penfield Public Library is a nonprofit organization located in Penfield, New York. It serves the community by providing educational, cultural, recreational, and technological resources.

Mission

The library's mission is to engage the community in life-long learning through diverse modes of exploration. This includes educational, cultural, recreational, and technological activities conducted in an inclusive atmosphere. The goal is to promote both individual and community growth[1][4].

History

The library became the first suburban library in Monroe County to join the Monroe County Library System. By September 1985, it had outgrown its space multiple times and relocated to a renovated former school on Baird Road, which remains its current location. In 2000, the library underwent a significant expansion, adding over 10,000 square feet. This expansion included the creation of a children's area, a story time room, quiet study rooms, and increased space for adult collections[2].

Programs and Services

The library offers a wide range of programs and services designed for all ages. These include:

  • Early Literacy Programs: Initiatives like "Baby Birds" for ages 0-2 and "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten" for ages 2-5 aim to enhance preschoolers' reading skills[3].
  • Book Clubs: The library supports book clubs by providing necessary materials and resources for successful meetings[3].
  • Museum and Park Passes: It offers VIP passes to some of upstate New York's most notable destinations[3].
  • Education and Technology: Programs covering academic tutoring, technology assistance, computer classes, and more are available[1].
  • Arts and Culture: The library hosts live performances, dance and music events, film screenings, and art classes[1].
  • Community Engagement: Additional activities such as gardening, cooking classes, and travel lectures are also part of its offerings[1].

Facilities

The library's facilities include quiet study rooms, children's areas, and enhanced spaces for both adult and youth collections. The 2000 expansion significantly improved the library's capacity to serve its community[2].
