United States Power Squadrons
The United States Power Squadrons (USPS), also known as America's Boating Club, is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to improving maritime safety and enhancing the overall boating experience. Founded in 1914, it has grown into the largest U.S. non-profit boating organization.
Mission and Activities
The USPS focuses on educating the public in boat handling, navigation, and related subjects to promote safe boating practices. It offers various courses, ranging from basic boating safety to advanced navigation using modern equipment like GPS and radar, as well as celestial navigation. Additionally, it provides courses in weather, marine engine maintenance, marine electronic and electrical systems, sail, and cruise planning.
Community Service
The organization is involved in several community service activities. It conducts free vessel safety checks, where qualified examiners check boats for compliance with federal and state safety regulations. These checks are not law enforcement events but rather educational opportunities for boat owners. The USPS also collaborates with organizations like the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the National Ocean Service to keep nautical charts up-to-date.
Membership and Structure
The USPS comprises approximately 45,000 members across about 450 squadrons in the United States and some U.S. territories. The organization is structured locally into these squadrons, which provide members with opportunities for social interaction and continued education through boating-related activities such as cruises and sail races.
Recognition
The United States Power Squadrons has been recognized for its civic contributions by three U.S. presidents.
Organization Flag
The USPS ensign features a distinctive design with a red canton bearing 13 white stars around a fouled anchor on a background of 13 vertical blue and white stripes. This flag is a symbol of the organization and is flown by its members.
Parallel Organization
A parallel organization, the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS), operates in Canada, reflecting a similar focus on boating education and safety.
