Biotechnology Association of Maine
The Biotechnology Association of Maine, commonly referred to as the Bioscience Association of Maine or BioME, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing economic growth and opportunities within Maine's life sciences community. Founded in 1995, the association serves as a collaborative platform for entrepreneurial life science companies, educators, students, and allied businesses.
Mission and Objectives
BioME's mission revolves around fostering growth in Maine's life sciences sector by engaging in advocacy, education, economic development, workforce development, and attracting out-of-state businesses. The association aims to strengthen the bioscience industry through these multifaceted efforts, ultimately contributing to the state's economic and educational development.
Activities and Programs
BioME hosts various programs and events throughout the year, including monthly virtual coffee hours, company tours, and networking receptions. These initiatives provide opportunities for members to engage with research initiatives, innovative companies, and industry developments while facilitating personal connections for academic and professional purposes.
The association also maintains a job board that is updated regularly to highlight job opportunities in Maine's life sciences industry. Additionally, BioME offers cost savings programs, leveraging partnerships with organizations like the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) to provide discounts on lab and office essentials, which significantly benefit member companies.
Advocacy and Policy
BioME has established an Advocacy Committee to educate policymakers about the bioscience sector. This includes highlighting industry challenges, opportunities, and political or economic impacts affecting the life science community. The association holds an annual legislative gathering to ensure policy makers are informed about BioME's initiatives and industry needs.
Economic Impact
Maine's bioscience industry, supported by BioME, encompasses over 484 life science companies, contributing significantly to the state's economy. In 2021, the bioscience industry in Maine provided more than 10,690 jobs with average earnings per job exceeding $108,000, significantly higher than the statewide average across all industries. The sector's economic output was reported to be approximately $2.2 billion in the same year.
Membership and Growth
BioME welcomes new members monthly, currently boasting a roster of over 230 companies and organizations. Membership in the association is beneficial for life science companies of all sizes, providing access to networking opportunities, cost savings programs, and a structured approach to industry advocacy and education.
In summary, the Biotechnology Association of Maine plays a pivotal role in promoting Maine's bioscience sector by fostering collaboration, innovation, and economic growth within the state's life sciences community.
