The Lambs, Inc.

The Lambs, Inc., also known as The Lambs Club, is a prestigious social club in New York City that has been nurturing individuals active in the arts, as well as those who support them, since its inception in 1874. Founded by Henry James Montague, it is the oldest professional theatrical organization in the United States and is named in honor of the essayist Charles Lamb and his sister Mary, who famously hosted literary salons in London during the early 19th century.

History

The Lambs was established at Delmonico's in New York City. Over the years, the club has been a hub for artistic creativity, fostering partnerships and friendships that have contributed significantly to the world of theater and entertainment. Notable performances that debuted at The Lambs include Mark Twain Tonight and Stalag 17. The club has also been instrumental in launching the careers of numerous artists by providing a supportive environment.

In 1882, members of The Lambs played a key role in founding the Actors’ Fund of America, now known as the Entertainment Community Fund. This marked a significant milestone in the organization's history, as it underscored its commitment to supporting those in the entertainment industry.

Fields, Eugene O'Neill, Donald Pippin, Cliff Robertson, Edward G. Robinson, and Spencer Tracy. Current honorary members include Matthew Broderick and Jim Dale.
