Little League Baseball Inc
Overview

Little League Baseball Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to providing structured baseball and softball experiences for youth worldwide. It is the first organized youth sports program globally and was founded by Carl E. Stotz in 1939.

History

The organization began in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, when Carl Stotz created a small league to allow his nephews and other children to play baseball in a more accessible format. He formed a three-team league with fields two-thirds the size of professional fields. The first Little League game took place on June 6, 1939.

Structure

Little League operates through a hierarchical structure comprising local leagues, districts, and regions.

  • Local Leagues: Each league is within a defined community boundary and provides opportunities for local children to participate in baseball and softball. Leagues are operated by volunteers and are generally self-funded through registration fees.
  • Districts: A group of 10-20 leagues form a district, overseen by a District Administrator who coordinates tournaments and ensures compliance with Little League regulations.
  • Regions: There are five regional centers in the United States and several internationally. These centers provide support and coordination for local programs.
Programs and Benefits

Little League offers programs for children aged 4 to 16 across more than 80 countries. Key benefits include:

  • Inclusive Participation: Every child plays in every game, ensuring participation regardless of skill level.
  • Community Engagement: The organization fosters community involvement through volunteer work and local leadership.
  • Life Lessons: The program emphasizes teamwork, discipline, and perseverance as essential life skills.
  • Operational Support: Offers resources, insurance, and financial support to local leagues.
Mission and Philosophy

Little League believes in the power of youth baseball and softball to teach life lessons that build stronger individuals and communities. The organization emphasizes fun, belonging, and teamwork as core elements of its programs.
