Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine
The Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine (SEBM) is a nonprofit scientific organization dedicated to advancing research in the biomedical sciences. Founded in 1903, it is one of the oldest and most influential biomedical research societies in the United States.
Founding
The SEBM was established following a proposal by Samuel J. Meltzer to create a society focused on experimental biology and medicine. Meltzer collaborated with Graham Lusk, a co-founder, to organize a conference at Lusk's home, where they discussed the formation of a permanent biomedical society. The attendees agreed to form a committee for the new organization.
Purpose and Activities
The SEBM aims to promote investigative research in the biomedical sciences, support the career development of its members, and foster interactions between established scientists and trainees. It achieves these goals through various activities, including:
- Publication: The SEBM publishes the journal Experimental Biology and Medicine, which was originally launched in 1904 as the Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine and received its current title in 2001.
- Conferences: The society organizes conferences and events, such as the Experimental Biology and Medicine Conference (EBMC), which provides a platform for interdisciplinary scientific discussions among career scientists and trainees.
