Born in Philadelphia, George Emerick Essig studied with Edward Moran and painted in and around the coast of New Jersey. His 1877 masterwork, "The Voyage Nearly Ended," depicts an array of mid-nineteenth century ships, including a two-masted schooner at left, a side-wheel steamer at distant right, and a stately whaling ship at center. While the setting sun and calm seas suggest an air of serenity, the title of Essig's Luminist scene insinuates an otherwise fraught journey at sea. See Essig's "The Voyage Nearly Ended" in "Lure of the Sea: Masterworks of American Coastal Art," on view at the New Britain Museum of American Art now through July 20. 🎨 George Emerick Essig (1838-1926), "The Voyage Nearly Ended," 1877, Oil on canvas, Frame: 36 3/4 × 58 in.
