Where has this word been all our lives? We need this concept desperately! 🌱 (fb)

In the midst of tightening education budgets, we must be ready to fight to keep music where it belongs, in the hands of the child. Feeling passionate about something: Music is not enrichment, an extra. It is a right to self-expression. Dr. Montessori taught that music isn’t to be reserved for, say, Thursdays at 2:05 pm— Or cut. Music lives in the classroom, among the math materials and the maps, the Great Stories and the handwork. Music was never an add-on to human experience. It is… fundamental. The sound of a Montessori classroom includes music by children in the background, singing, bells, and strumming. The photo, these are the Montessori Tone Bars. Maybe you are familiar with The Bells. But do you know the Tone Bars? It’s a material of profound power when it is accessible to children all the time. Movable, touchable, and tuned with precision, they offer every child a way into music. Like language, you offer it to the young. If you want them to speak a language, it has to be every day. Music is a core subject. Children build scales. Rearrange notes. Compose. Play by ear. They learn that music has structure, meaning, logic, and feeling. They learn that they can create music as naturally as they express themselves with words. When Maria Montessori and Anna Maccheroni brought music into the classroom, it was not the idea of music as a 50-minutes-a-week luxury— or only for families which could manage lessons, clubs, and camps. We must keep pulling music like the Tone Bars into the classroom environment. It’s the soul of Montessori. ——- Photo, the Montessori Prepared Environment at MINT led by AMI 6-12 Director of Training, Virginia K. Viscovic, M.A. Curious about upcoming short courses? We are enrolling for multiple short Orientation Courses coming up, as well as full Montessori diploma courses. We have to be ready to make our case to the world. Education, there’s another way. ~ Link in bio 🔗 (fb)
