Protectors of Animals is having our 12th annual Kitten Shower tomorrow (Friday)! We'll be at Hops on the Hill, 275 Dug Road, South Glastonbury from 4:00 to 8:00. The shower will go forward rain or shine under a big tent. There will be food, beer and other beverages, and raffles. You can find out about volunteering or fostering, learn about the animals we have available for adoption, and meet some of our ambassador kittens. It’ll be a fun day and we hope to see you there. The Annual Kitten Shower is POA's yearly opportunity to raise the funds and supplies to support our foster team and to help us take care of our tiniest rescues. All of our foster homes are volunteer and we want to help them ensure our cats and kittens have the best care. And that means making sure that they have what they need. What do they need? Well, some of it is obvious. Moms and kittens need both wet and dry food. Kittens may need supplemental milk replacement, especially if mom is not in the picture. Litter and litter boxes are pretty important! And extra toys are always appreciated. But some things are less obvious. For example, we try to give each of our foster homes a scale so that they can weigh each of the kittens every day. When you have a litter of six kittens, it can be hard to tell if one isn’t getting enough nutrition and may not be thriving. And acting quickly to intervene could be critical when a kitten weighs only a few ounces. So weighing them at the same time every day ensures that the foster family will know if one kitten is losing weight. They can then reach out to our medical team or their foster team leads for next steps. Kittens also need to be kept warm. 70 to 75° warm. (We will have heaters available at our shower tomorrow.) And the tiniest kittens cannot regulate their own body temperature. So heating pads or self warming beds can be great for younger or sick kittens. Being able to offer those to our foster homes means they can keep their tiny kittens comfortable and give mom a little help. Every year we are contacted about literally hundreds of kittens needing help. Kittens are fragile. But at Protectors of Animals we have been taking care of stray and abandoned cats and kittens for 50 years. We know that the odds are sometimes against them. But we also know that the more we can offer our foster homes in terms of education, support, and supplies, the better the chances of a happy, healthy kitten with a wonderful future. With your help, we can make a difference. We will be accepting donations from our wishlist at the shower but if you wanted to donate but can't make it on Friday you can send donations directly to Protectors of Animals at 144 Main Street, Unit O, East Hartford 06118. You can check out our wishlist here: https://a.co/eJ90xCE.
